The Vancouver Church of Christ has been involved in missions in Togo for about 20 years. We started by supporting Edwin and Patty Slack in their early survey trips to Africa, then as their sponsoring church (1991-2001). After they left the field in 2001, we continued supporting the missionary school there until the American missionaries all left Togo in December of 2008.
Our prayer is that the churches among the Watchi/Eve peoples of southern Togo will continue to grow and thrive under the leadership of the local elders.
At the age of 9, at a Together for Togo seminar hosted by the Vancouver church, Amy Shaffer (now Crocker),
committed to serving as a missionary in Togo some day. It took 12 years for her to grow into
her dream. But in August 2006, she left to serve as teacher to the missionary kids in Tabligbo for one
school year. She served alongside Emily Dunnagan as teacher for the six boys who remain
on the field. Amy and her husband Robin now live and work as teachers in Kigali, Rwanda, where the last two families on the southern Togo team recently relocated.
Though we no longer send financial support to the Togo work or the Crockers, our prayers are with them as they serve God in Rwanda.
You can visit the Crowsons' website for more information or to subscribe to the team's weekly email newsletter. Please pray
with us for the team's transition to a new language and culture. Pray also for the Togolese Christians who must continue on their own.
